Not many years ago, practical weed control was limited to preventing crabgrass with a pre-emergent and knocking out the existing clover, dandelions, and other broadleaf weeds by means of post-emergent weed controls. Not anymore. New products improved application methods have made it possible to control a much wider range of weedy plants both economically and in a timely fashion.
Better for the environment
A “blanket weed control treatment (one where the entire lawn is treated) is sometimes necessary when treating with crabgrass preventer or when a lawn is choked with weeds. After we’ve reduced the weed population, spot treatments are often all that’s needed. Using backpack or hand-held application equipment allows us to handle spot weed problems and mix custom materials for special applications. Since most broadleaf weed controls work only on weeds that is activity growing it makes good environmental sense to avoid treatments where there are no weeds.
Wider range of needs
In addition to improvements in application equipment, specialized products are allowing us to handle problems that had no reasonable solutions just a few years ago. During hot months, weeds create a waxy coating to help keep moisture in. Unfortunately this also keeps weed controls out. The best control is always achieved during cooler and moister seasons.
